Ofelia Maldonado Zapata received 60.46% of votes in the Austin ISD District 2 race and has won a the seat on the board of trustees.

Travis County results as of 12:20 a.m. Nov. 4, Zapata has received 14,434 votes. She defeated John McKiernan-Gonzalez, who received 6,707 votes, and Adolphus "Andy" Anderson, who received 2,733.

Zapata told Community Impact Newspaper that current District 2 trustee Jayme Mathias—who was not on the ballot—was the first person to call her earlier in the evening to congratulate her on winning the community’s support.

“‘I’m feeling great,” she said. “I’m very, very, very enthusiastic. I don’t even know how to explain it.”

Zapata, a longtime activist in Southeast Austin who said she has learned to listen to the community, said that her community has lost a lot of families to charter schools in recent years. She said her hope is that as new programs are introduced throughout the district, she can help bring new opportunities to District 2, and bring some of those families back.

“The families here have amazing students,” she said. “There’s so much talent in our students and community in District 2 that is untapped. If you want your students to be in special programs, bring them back to Austin ISD.”

Results are updated as of 11:30 p.m. and are unofficial until they are canvassed and certified by the county clerk. Under Texas election law, the clerk accepts and counts mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by Nov. 4, if they were sent from inside the U.S., or Nov. 9 if they were sent from outside the U.S.
