Austin ISD is considering three names as options for the new elementary school being built in Southwest Austin, with a vote by the board of trustees scheduled for May 18.

According to district documents, the district is currently considering the following three names for the school:

  • Barbara Beyer Elementary School

  • Bear Creek Elementary School

  • Lady Bird Elementary School

The new southwest elementary school is under construction at the corner of Trissino Drive and Escarpment Boulevard in the Avana neighborhood. The $36.3 million school was funded through the district’s 2017 bond program and is currently scheduled to open for classes in August, coronavirus regulations permitting.

Those families zoned for the school include a mix of students formerly zoned for Kiker and Baranoff elementary schools. According to the district, the campus will have a capacity of 522 students.

According to the district, Barbara Beyer was a former AISD elementary teacher who worked at Oak Hill Elementary School before passing away in 2005.

Bear Creek is a natural creek located south of the new campus in Southwest Austin.

Lady Bird Elementary would be a reference to former First Lady of the United States Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson, the namesake of Southwest Austin’s Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and Lady Bird Lake downtown.
