After two presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in the Austin-Travis County area by Austin Public Health, Austin ISD has announced that school will be closed Friday, March 13.

"In the interest of health safety in regard to our students and staff, AISD schools and offices will be closed Friday, March 13," a notice on the district's website read March 13. "District administration will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide operational updates, as necessary."

Austin ISD also announced March 12 that the district has canceled large gatherings, field trips, field days and spring break camps through April 3. The district will also stop the renting district buildings to outside groups during that time.

The district will be closed to students and staff for spring break from March 16-20. In the announcement, the district said it will also be excusing all health-related absences from March 23-April 3.

City and county officials were scheduled to host a press conference on March 13 at 6 a.m. to provide more information on the cases. Presumptive positive cases have tested positive at a health lab but have not yet been confirmed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
