After two months of operating as a brick-and-mortar location at 11600 Menchaca Road, Austin, South Austin native Roger Pilney made the announcement he is closing Radix House Southside Cafe & Pizza.

In a nutshell

The brick-and-mortar location opened in the former Southside Flying Pizza location on May 10. Due to the cost of repairs and other outside factors, Pilney made the decision to close the shop with the intention of reopening the food trailer soon; however, he said Radix House will need the assistance of the community to carry out the plan.

Quote of note

“We hope that the community can help us stay alive. Our family has exhausted the last of my father's life insurance,” Pilney posted on social media July 1. “We're very scared and hoping to see you stop by for something delicious and/or one of our products that so many enjoy. We want to work our way out of this but need help. Please.”

The last day for the brick-and-mortar location will be July 9 or when inventory runs out—whichever comes first, Pilney said. He is working on reopening the trailer at 3008 W. Slaughter Lane sometime during the week of July 10. Additionally, the trailer at 2701 W. William Cannon Drive will remain open, he said.

In addition to food and coffee, Radix House offers legal CBD- and THC-infused products. Pilney said the reason for this is largely due to the benefits consuming these products can have—especially for those struggling with mental health. Pilney said he is passionate about mental health, and Radix House partners with programs that support post-traumatic stress disorder treatment and research in Texas.

“Radix House is a leader in the mental health community and founded some of the first infused food and drinks in the area to help educate the community on the benefits many enjoy through these products,” Pilney said. “We are proud to help connect people with information about our partners at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, share resources for those impacted by PTSD and be a safe place to connect on subjects like these.”

How to help

Pilney is asking the community to make donations and buy products from Radix House to help keep his business and mission of mental health awareness going.

“We will need help to rebound fast in order to make it,” Pilney said. “We had no choice but to make these changes due to the amount of money spent to date to try to make this work and that we are as close to being bankrupt as we have ever been. My mother and I are in a bad situation, but doing our best to stay focused on our mission to help end suicide and help those impacted by PTSD.”
