“The Christmas after [my dad] passed away, my husband interviewed my mom, starting with her earliest memory, and gave it as a present to my brother, my sister and I,” Lammering said. “And in this interview, he was able to capture stories that we never heard, her mannerisms, her laughter, some life advice and really capture who she is.”
Four years ago, Ray and Lammering began conducting interviews for others, but after having their first child and entering the pandemic, the idea for YourTale was put on pause.
Ray, a music producer and audio engineer, decided to open the doors to his at-home recording studio in August, and YourTale began operating.
An individual can request an interview for themselves or on the behalf of someone else. The process begins with a preliminary phone call with Ray, who helps determine what someone wants out of the interview.
“Some people want some family history and to know how much their parents remember about their parents and great-grandparents,” Ray said. “Other people want to chronicle pivotal moments of their life.”
The interview is given as a private streaming link, visible only to the interviewee. In the mail, the interviewee will be sent a thumb drive in a faux leather bound box that the interview lives on, and additional thumb drives can be purchased.
A typical 2- to 2 1/2-hour interview begins at $500 and can be booked online.
“It's really about capturing the essence of a person,” Ray said. “That really comes down to their voice and the way that they say ‘like,’ or the way they think about something where they laugh.”
