Kristen Garcia’s mother, Effie Garcia, taught her to hunt for unique vintage finds at estate sales, garage sales and the little vintage shops the two used to frequent.

“It was the one thing we bonded over the most,” Kristen Garcia said.

Effie passed away April 11, 2021, after a battle with lung cancer and, at that time, Kristen had lingering thoughts about starting a business, but was still terrified to take the leap, she said.

Then, last fall, Kristen spotted a cute little 1960s house-turned-salon for rent at at 4706 S. Congress Ave., Austin, and decided to make a change. Kristen Garcia and her father, Joel, flipped the salon configuration into a vintage shop, which Kristen then named Effie Vintage for her mother. It opened Dec. 11. Kristen has not been able to find another Austin curated vintage shop south of Hwy. 290 West and suspects hers is the only one.

The shop is filled with folk art, antique furniture, unique dishware and curiosities, including vintage books and an antique gun for display. The shop can be reached at 512-784-8301.
