Those driving in North or Central Austin during the long weekend can expect road closures and possible traffic disruptions beginning Jan. 18, according to the city's Transportation and Public Works Department.

What you need to know

1. Austin International Half Marathon

Partial and full road closures will be in effect for the Austin International Half Marathon beginning at 7 a.m. Jan. 18 and expected to reopen following the race Jan. 19.



Alternate routes include:
  • North and south traffic: I-35 and MoPac will remain fully accessible. Lamar Boulevard and Guadalupe Street will also remain accessible, with the race crossing only at 45th Street.
  • East and west traffic: US 183, 24th Street and Cesar Chavez Street will remain fully accessible. Koenig Land, West Anderson Lane and 38th Street are accessible to cross the race only once.
2. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March and Festival

A celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr. will kick off with a rally at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 20 on the south steps of the State Capitol. The rally will be followed by a march which ends at Huston-Tillotson University, where the festival will take place.

Partial road closures will take effect at 10 a.m. Jan. 20, with roads reopening as marchers clear.



Alternate routes include:
  • North and south traffic: There are not traffic impacts expected.
  • East and west traffic: East 12th Street will remain fully accessible.
