Intravenous therapy, a medical procedure that delivers vitamins, minerals and fluids directly into a patient’s bloodstream, has risen in popularity in recent years with various IV therapy centers opening locations in Central Texas. From specialized companies like The Drip Bar to wellness clinics and med spas, there is a trend in businesses that offer the treatment.

According to Sabira Karovalia and Mary Ann Baltierra-Rocha, co-owners of IV Nutrition in South Austin, IV therapy can target more than just hydration.

Explained

IV therapy administers vitamins, minerals and nutrients directly into the bloodstream for wellness benefits, such as:
  • Hydration
  • Increased immune health
  • Athletic recovery
  • Stress relief
  • Migraine relief
  • Chronic illness management
IV Nutrition’s drips and injections are based on the "Myers' cocktail,” a mixture of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and vitamin C. IV therapy provides vitamins and minerals the body already makes, Baltierra-Rocha said.

“The body is designed to heal and adapt on its own. That's how we were born,” she said. “But it starts slowing down as we age, and also due to multiple stressors: the foods we eat, the daily stressors of work ... environmental stressors. ... If we can provide the body to offset those stressors with IV vitamins and minerals, you can live at your optimum levels of health.”

How it works

Texas law states that intravenous therapy must be provided by a licensed nurse. Baltierra-Rocha said risks can be involved, and it is recommended that potential clients consult their doctor beforehand. Karovalia said an IV Nutrition visit begins with filling out an intake form and an evaluation of vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate, to ensure the patient can undergo the treatment.

A consultation to choose the bag best for the patient’s needs follows. Karovalia said a session can take 30-45 minutes.

“I think a lot of times, traditional medicine is like putting a Band-Aid on a problem,” Karovalia said. “Rather than putting a Band-Aid, we treat the root cause.”
