The Salt Lick BBQ family to open new concept Roxie's in downtown Buda

Roxie's, a Salt Lick Family Restaurant, is set to open this spring at Buda Mill & Grain Co.

According to a news release, Roxie's will be open for lunch and dinner with a menu focused on family recipes. Guests can expect to see appetizers like pimento cheese crocks and deviled eggs topped with fried chicken bites; hearty, family-style entrees, including crispy fried chicken, chicken-fried steak and char-grilled steak; and a selection of dessert pies inspired by Roxie’s original recipes.

Road work to begin on Slaughter Lane in South Austin

Crews will begin work installing mobility and safety improvements this spring along Slaughter Lane, from MoPac to Brodie Lane, according to a recent update from the city of Austin.

The existing four-lane roadway from MoPac to Brodie Lane will be expanded to six lanes, adding a lane in either direction, according to city documents.

Bike lanes and shared use paths along the roadway will also see safety improvements.

Mama Betty’s Tex-Mex cantina to open second location in North Austin

Sizzling North Austin Tex-Mex restaurant Mama Betty’s has sparked plans for another location on Burnet Road, set to serve up fajitas and margaritas by summer 2025.

The new location is expected to offer the same menu items, featuring Tex-Mex favorites, such as quesadillas, enchiladas and homemade tortillas, as well as in-house specials like Snapper Vera Cruz.

Tim Hortons now serving coffee, donuts and more on Austin-Round Rock border

Tim Hortons opened its first Austin-area location on the Austin-Round Rock border Dec. 21.

The Canadian franchise serves coffee drinks, tea, doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches, wraps and other pastry items.

Round Rock ISD considering modifications to new state reading, language arts curriculum

A Dec. 16 news release from RRISD states that district administrators are considering how to implement the new curriculum, Bluebonnet Learning. Bluebonnet will replace the Amplify, Carnegie and Eureka curricula for elementary school-level language arts and reading, math for kindergarten through eighth grade and algebra 1, as previously reported by Community Impact.

School districts are able to modify Bluebonnet Learning materials to suit their needs, and RRISD administrators are considering how best to modify the reading and language arts curriculum to suit students in the district. Per the release, this modification could include removing Bible-based lessons and activities, or increasing the overall diversity of characters and content of stories covered.

Brass Peacock speakeasy now open in Georgetown

The cocktail bar is located beneath City Post Chophouse, a steakhouse run out of Georgetown’s former post office building that operated from 1932-1990, according to the restaurant’s website.

Brass Peacock’s craft cocktails are inspired by the Prohibition era, said Kristina Moore, a spokesperson for City Post. The 1933-style speakeasy is open Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight and offers live music both nights, she said.
