Texas voters will see eight statewide races on their ballots during the 2024 primaries. Several state judges, a railroad commissioner and one U.S. senator are up for re-election in 2024. All statewide offices on the ballot are held by Republican incumbents.

Texas will hold Republican and Democratic primaries on March 5 to determine who will be on the ballot in November.

Community Impact compiled a list of the candidates running for statewide offices in 2024. According to the Texas Democratic Party, each party has five days after the filing deadline to provide complete lists of all filed candidates to the secretary of state’s office.

U.S. Senate: Ted Cruz, one of Texas’ two U.S. senators, is up for re-election in 2024. Senators serve staggered six-year terms.

The Texas Railroad Commission does not actually govern railroads—the Texas Department of Transportation has that authority. Instead, the commission regulates the oil and gas industry, coal and uranium surface mining, natural gas utilities, and more.

Texas Supreme Court Justice, Place 2: Justice Jimmy Blacklock is running for re-election to the state’s highest court.

Justices on the nine-member Texas Supreme Court serve staggered six-year terms. Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, who is 74 years old, is expected to retire next year after voters rejected a state proposition that would have raised the mandatory retirement period from ages 70-75 to ages 75-79.
