As iconic Mexican restaurant Fonda San Miguel nears the celebration of a half a century operating in North Austin, Owner Tom Gilliland announced the birth of a new concept to be called Tzintzuntzan—pronounced "zin-zoon-zhan."

What we know

The new venue, to be located just next door, will serve up all the same authentic Mexican cuisine, but now for breakfast and lunch.

“It’s long been our aspiration to expand the scope of what Fonda provides its patrons for dinner by creating a new space where our menu offerings would be extended to include regional Mexican dishes for [breakfast and lunch], along with extraordinary items from a genuine panaderia,” Gilliland said in a statement Aug. 29.

Tzintzuntzan, which means "place of hummingbirds," is currently being designed by renowned architectural firm Miro Rivera Architects.

The new restaurant is expected to open in the spring of next year and though the two restaurants will operate independently, they will share a patio and garden area.

“A memorable space that is connected to a communal activity is one of the best things that humans can do because it’s where we feel that connection as humans,” Lead architect Juan Miro said in a news release regarding the new space.

The Tzintzuntzan menu will be introduced at an event on Sept. 15, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in Fonda San Miguel. Guests will be able to sample menu items as the restaurant kicks off its celebration of Mexican Independence Day.
