What's happening
The Greater Austin YMCA will lease over 16,000 square feet on the fifth floor of AISD's headquarters over the next five years. The organization relocated from its former space at 55 N. I-35 Frontage Road, Austin, which will be impacted by construction and affect transportation for employees.

AISD will use this rental income to offset the operating expenses for its central office and redirect budgeted dollars to other areas, according to AISD and YMCA information.
The district has cut $63 million from its central office operations as it faces a nearly $100 million projected budget shortfall for fiscal year 2024-25. AISD is considering closing and consolidating schools beginning in the 2026-27 school year to further reduce expenses.
The background
The YMCA offers after-school care for students at over 30 AISD campuses and summer day camp programs at four campuses. The organization provided free water safety and fitness education to over 10,000 AISD students since 2010, according to YMCA information.
