Some Austinites remember the wall of graffiti near 24 Diner and the previous location of Waterloo Records, visible to anyone cruising up and down Lamar Boulevard.

The details

After having been erased for the last six years, the concept known as HOPE Outdoor Gallery has plans for a new, expanded location in South Austin near the Austin airport.

The new 18-acre location is anticipated to include an open-air cultural events center, community art park and technology gallery. The site will also house murals from local artists, a new cafe, a rooftop bar, an art supply shop, community programming, flexible event space, a food truck park, community art walls and other local vendors.

With a nod to the gallery’s deep roots in Austin, the new art park will also feature a memorial wall from the original Baylor Street location and is using recycled concrete from the original site as a foundation for the new locale.

The project initially broke ground in 2019 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the permitting process, according to a news release. An official opening date, hours of operation and park programs will be announced in the coming months.

The new HOPE Outdoor Gallery will be free and open to the public.
