Community feedback guided Buda City Council’s approval of the updated West Goforth Road design, reflecting residents’ and business owners’ priorities on traffic, safety and drainage.

The details

These latest changes to design come after Buda residents and business owners were invited to an open house April 29 at Buda City Hall to see updated project details and provide further input.

“The April 29 open house had about 40 attendees consisting of both residents and business owners,” said Blair Murski, a senior project engineer with the city of Buda, in a staff report. “Staff also received 17 formal comments from the virtual open house.”

Officials, who took the public feedback into account, requested that Austin-based Freese & Nichols, the firm contracted for design, adhere to several recommendations moving forward, including:
  • Decreasing truck traffic west of Stream Way
  • Exploring other traffic calming measures
  • Prioritizing drainage improvements
  • Removing both proposed roundabouts
About the project

The voter-approved project—financed with approximately $20.9 million in 2021 Buda Bond Proposition A funds—will include a full-depth asphalt pavement reconstruction of West Goforth Road from South Loop 4 to I-35, according to the city's bond website.

Additional improvements include:
  • Adding sidewalks and cycling accommodations
  • Removing a two-way left-turn lane
  • Separation of traffic lanes in the Gateway Corridor with raised and flush medians
  • Widening the existing two-lane roadway
  • 5-foot vegetative buffers
Final design plans are ongoing, and the timing for construction will depend on the right-of-way and easement acquisition process, according to city officials.
