Hays County and Texas Department of Transportation officials celebrated the completion of the FM 2001 West realignment project March 23, which got rid of sharp curves in the road and is meant to improve safety to the area.

The project broke ground in June 2021 and cost around $6 million, funded by TxDOT.

“Prior to the project, FM 2001 was full of sharp turns and curves and just challenges that we had to overcome on a daily basis. FM 2001 West is about a mile in length and begins here at Sunbright Boulevard and extends just west of Hillside Terrace, creating a four-lane, divided roadway with curbs, sidewalks and what you see around us today,” said William Semora, TxDOT's south Travis County engineer. “This not only added more lanes to keep up with the growth in Buda, but it also enhanced safety by eliminating those sharp curves.”

Semora was joined by Hays County Commissioner Michelle Cohen and Hays County Judge Chief of Staff Alex Villalobos.

“This is really exciting for our community; the growth has just been immense in our area,” Cohen said. “I'm really excited about this project; I'm excited about our future of growth on the east side and what we can do to accomplish wonderful things with our partners.”

Villalobos spoke in lieu of Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra who was unable to attend.

“I know that some of these projects are slow going, and it takes a lot of effort, but literal blood, sweat and tears go into these projects,” Villalobos said. “These commissioners take into consideration many different things when they're making decisions on these projects. ... This brings ease of traffic; it's public safety; it is economic development; it is a promise of future growth in these areas. It's also an improvement of quality of life for walking and enjoying this beautiful area of Central Texas.”

This is one of three overall FM 2001 projects; there is no timeline for when the other two projects will begin and be completed as there is no funding secured yet.
