Buda City Council received a presentation from Ashby Johnson, executive director for the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, at a June 7 meeting regarding transportation initiatives in the city of Buda and within the Central Texas region.

CAMPO is the metropolitan planning organization subsidiary responsible for the transportation plans that encompass Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties.

The current Regional Active Transportation Plan was approved in summer 2020 and outlines 539 projects totaling around $42.5 billion, according to the presentation. The RATP covers trails, sidewalks, bike lanes and streets.

The RATP was created as part of the National Association of Chronic Disease directors to learn about and improve upon the health equity outcomes of walking, according to the plan.

Johnson mentioned a pedestrian and bicycle path project in the RATP on the east side of FM 2001 that is nearing design completion.

There is also a Transportation Improvement Program for 2023-26 that contains a list of projects with funding allotted that will begin construction within the four-year time frame.

Within the TIP, Johnson highlighted the realignment of FM 2001 that will add lanes and shoulders along FM 2001 to Graef Road that is expected to begin in 2024. Johnson also mentioned an intersection at FM 967 and FM 1626, a highly congested area that the council has mentioned time and time again over safety issues. The analysis would study potential short- and long-term improvements to the area.

The CAMPO board amends the TIP twice a year and during the next amendment cycle this fall, Johnson expects there to be additional funding left over, though he is not sure how much additional funding there will be.

Therefore, there will be a call for projects in early 2023 to utilize additional funding leftover after the amendment for transportation projects throughout the six counties.

Mayor Lee Urbanovsky expressed interest and excitement as he said there are many "shovel-ready" projects within Buda that could take off with the additional funds available.
