The Buda City Council approved a contract with MA Smith Contracting Co., Inc., for the Cabela’s Connector road construction project estimated at $1,193,200 at a meeting April 19. Cabela’s Connector is one of Buda’s top projects to improve mobility and expand the road network, according to the city’s strategic plan.

The project will create a new road from Cabela’s Drive to West Goforth Road that will help with traffic and cut through traffic when residents try getting to Main Street, Mayor Lee Urbanovsky said at the meeting.

MA Smith has done previous roadwork for the city, namely Houston Street and Old Goforth Road drainage and street improvements from the 2014 bond.

Partial funding for Cabela’s Connector will come from 2021 Certificates of Obligation, which is a form of borrowing money generally to fund public works projects that do not need voter approval; about $330,000 will be needed from the city’s general fund to finance the rest of the project.

The project is expected to begin in early June and could be completed near the end of December.
