The Texas Department of Transportation is nearing completion on construction work at the I-35 and Posey Road intersection in San Marcos.

“TxDOT anticipates the I-35 at Posey Road project to be substantially complete by early November, weather permitting,” TxDOT Public Information Officer Brad Wheelis said in an email.

The project will reconfigure the intersection so the highway will go over Posey Road, according to the TxDOT website. The new configuration will improve safety and east-west connectivity, Wheelis said.

“There was also a lot of heavy truck traffic that crossed the old bridge, and it was difficult to make the tight turns,” he added.

The project will add lanes through frontage lane intersections, U-turn lanes, and pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle paths, according to the website.

Remaining work on the intersection includes milling and paving I-35 lanes and ramps as well as final striping throughout the project. TxDOT anticipates the remaining work will cause some lane closures, Wheelis said.

The project, which began in February 2019, was originally slated for an early 2021 completion, but weather delays and supply chain issues pushed that date back. The construction work cost $31.7 million and was funded by TxDOT.
