As a precautionary measure, the city of San Marcos advised its residents to boil water before consumption until at least 5 p.m. on Nov. 14, at which point it will receive test results back.

A water main was damaged during construction, causing pressure to drop in some areas below the level requiring a boil water notice for the city utility's customers, according to a press release issued by the city.

No evidence of contamination was apparent Nov. 12 when the notice was issued.

“The boil notice is precautionary only, as we have no evidence of water contamination, but it is a necessary step anytime that there’s a lack of pressure in the main lines for an extended period,” Public Services Director Tom Taggart said. “After the main is repaired and water samples are processed, we would expect to receive satisfactory water quality results by 5 p.m. on Saturday which will allow us to rescind the precautionary boil water notice at that time.”

All water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil for two minutes and then cooled prior to consumption until the city lifts the advisory. Water provided from sources other than the city utility are also an option, as is bottled water.
