Bill Wittliff, the renowned writer, filmmaker and photographer who penned the "Lonesome Dove" screenplay, died June 9 at age 79. The late writer co-founded the Wittliff Collections, which are housed on the seventh floor of Albert B. Alkek Library at Texas State University, with his wife Sally, and in partnership with the university in 1986. The collections, which feature archives of Southwestern writers, were established as a permanent exhibit when the university's new library building opened in 1990.
