Work on Hunter Road near Bishop Street in San Marcos could be completed as early as August, said Richard Reynosa, project engineer with the city of San Marcos.

Crews have been working on utility relocation near the road’s intersection with Bishop Street. The work has caused closures of some lanes in the project area.

Reynosa said the remaining work on Hunter Road includes finalizing utility work, adding landscaping and completing final paving.

The project widened portions of the road between Bishop and Posey Road to the south, and some portions of the road received bike lanes and sidewalks. Reynosa said the project will ensure Hunter Road’s aesthetics match those of Wonder World Drive.

The project was also aimed at improving drainage and drivability during rain events. A bridge was added over Purgatory Creek, he said.

“Now we have a bridge there, so that now the road is passable,” he said. “Before [construction], a rain event would cut the road off, so that was a big component of the project.”

The Texas Department of Transportation also began construction on a four-lane overpass at the intersection of Hwy. 123 and Wonder World Drive in March. The project’s budget—including utility relocation, design, engineering and construction—is $13.19 million, and construction is expected to take 27 months.

Project Engineer Shaun Condor said the overpass is aimed at increasing safety on the road.

“The idea is that there are a lot of collisions at that intersection from cars coming from Seguin [and] taking that left turn onto Wonder World Drive,” Condor said. “There are a lot of head-on collisions. To avoid those collisions they’re going to separate traffic. Now Hwy. 123 traffic will go straight up over Wonder World.”

The overpass will include two lanes in each direction as well as two-lane access roads on both sides of the overpass. A traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection.

Condor said the intersection will look similar to that of Hwy. 80 and SH 21 when completed.
