The overview
The purchase will be funded by existing city funds designated for property acquisition, according to Mayor Pro Tem Bear Heiser.
Following discussions in executive session, Heiser motioned to approve the agreement, with a second from council member Marc McKinney. Council member Miguel Zuniga recused himself from voting.
The purpose of the property acquisition was not clarified.
The property at 103 N. Burleson St. is located near Kyle’s Animal Control facility. It is a few blocks from downtown but not immediately within it. The property at 208 W. Center St. is closer to downtown, near Mary Kyle Hartson Park and Texas Pie Company.
The background
These proposed property acquisitions come after a separate purchase in January for two properties on Veterans Drive, where the City Council also did not clarify the intended use or purchase price.
Similar to the current acquisitions, Zuniga dissented on the previous purchase, stating he did not see an immediate strategic need for the acquisition and felt the decision was rushed.
