The city of Kyle is continuing its quest to revitalize the downtown area.

Kyle City Council unanimously approved the purchase of multiple downtown properties totaling $4.45 million during a special meeting on July 24. Council members Bear Heiser and Miguel Zuniga were absent from the meeting.

What residents need to know

The addresses for the properties are as follows:
  • Hays City Donuts and The Main Squeeze, 106 N. Burleson St.
  • Kyle Car Wash, 111 N. Burleson St. and 201 W. Lockhart St.
  • Cash Box Pawn, 102 N. Burleson St. and 210 W. Center St.
The donut shop was purchased for $1.3 million and the car wash properties were purchased for $1.65 million. The pawn shop properties was purchased for an additional $1.5 million.

As of right now, Hays City Donuts and The Main Squeeze are operating at 106 N. Burleson St. However, City Manager Bryan Langley said the city does not need the building right away, and the two businesses will still have a lease.

The Main Squeeze owners said they were “blindsided” by the property being sold to the city, but are navigating the next steps, according to a Facebook post.

“This is not the end for Main Squeeze,” the post states. “As of right now we will continue to be open and serve the beautiful people who have supported us. We will continue to do markets and festivals as well.”

The property acquisitions will be paid for through the city's Capital Improvement Project budget. Money had been transferred to the CIP budget over time from the general fund to use towards making improvements downtown, Langley told Community Impact.

What's next?

Langley said the city will sign the contracts and proceed with closing on the properties while they continue working on master planning and redeveloping downtown Kyle.
