The Buda Public Library will be waiving all late fines for visitors who have overdue items checked out, starting Oct. 1 through the end of the year.

The gist

In 2019, the American Library Association adopted a resolution calling on libraries to actively move toward eliminating fines; many libraries across the country have begun dropping late fees, prompting city officials to try it out.

The City Council approved the matter at a meeting Sept. 19, which will aim to incentivize more visits from new and existing patrons.

Additionally, late fees were not budgeted for as part of the new budget, so there will be no financial impact to the city as a result, according to agenda documents.

Any Hays County resident is eligible for a free library card to the Buda Public Library; nonresidents can pay an annual $15 fee for a library card.
