A select few San Marcos residents will have the chance to participate in the new UniverCity program, offering a behind-the-scenes look at various departments to learn more about the city's inner workings. The program consists of weekly classes from March 30-May 11; a dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation at 6 p.m.

The course schedule is as follows:
  • March 30: city overview, mayor, City Council, city manager's office, city clerk's office, communications and history of San Marcos
  • April 6: finance, human services, information technology, airport
  • April 13: city activity center, parks and recreation, Main Street, Visit San Marcos with arts
  • April 20: fire department, police department, emergency management, city marshal's office
  • April 27: public library, neighborhood enhancement
  • May 4: public works, SMTX utilities
  • May 11: planning and development services, engineering, capital improvement projects
  • May 18: graduation
The program is free and only open to residents of San Marcos. Applications are being accepted through March 16; candidates will know if they are selected by March 20.
