After plans to rename Rebel Drive in Kyle to Fajita Drive failed to garner support from residents, Kyle officials have taken a different track in the process to change what many consider a controversial road name.

City Council voted Sept. 1 to create an ad hoc committee to rename Rebel Drive and during a separate agenda item voted to remove the name Rebel Drive from the stretch of road also called FM 150.

The committee will consist of Kyle residents who must be at least 18 years of age, a qualified voter, a resident of Kyle for at least 12 months and have no debts toward the city.

Among other questions, applicants will also be asked if they own a business or home along Rebel Drive.

Committee members must meet at least once a quarter, and city information states Kyle staffers Samantha Armbruster and Steve Clamons will serve as the liaisons for the body.

Though the motion to create the committee passed 6-1, Mayor Travis Mitchell leveled his objections regarding the renaming and said while he is not against community involvement, he wants to take a more conservative, measured approach moving forward.

Mitchell reasoned the road should simply be RM 150 for now, and the process could possibly be revisited at a later date if residents desire.

"I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't at least mention what my true belief is, and that is that we should not create a committee right away and go down this path," Mitchell said.

District 1 Council Member Dex Ellison rebutted Mitchell by saying for him, the creation of the committee symbolizes an inclusive environment in which everyone can feel like they have a voice.

"I hope that residents apply and participate, and we can move forward with something that is inclusive and that the community can be proud of," Ellison said.

Applications for the committee are open as of Sept. 2.
