An exhibit dedicated to Native American and Mexican American history will make its debut this weekend at the Hays County Historic Courthouse.

The details

The exhibit, titled “The Past Within Us,” will include various installations of Hays County history, from pre-Hays County times to the early 1900s.

The first installation will showcase the Indigenous creation story, Native American tribes of Hays County and their languages, and more on pre-Hays County life, according to a news release.

The second installation will dive into the establishment of the first villa, called San Marcos de Neve, and the Spanish colonization of the area.

The third installation will walk through the creation of Hays County in the 1800s, the state of Indigenous people during the time, and how Mexican vaqueros contributed to the ranching economy.

The center of the exhibit will feature panels of Tejanos with a “rich history in Hays County, who continue to call this place home,” the news release states.

The Council for the Indigenous and Tejano Community worked on the exhibit for a year and a half, according to the news release.
