Local students can get spooky and creative this weekend at the San Marcos Art League’s fifth annual Art Scared youth art installation and coinciding market.

What’s happening

Since 2019, the SMAL has partnered with local schools and sponsors to provide art supplies and prizes for Art Scared, a temporary Halloween art installation open to San Marcos elementary through high school students. Organizers have mapped out 79 window spaces at participating businesses on The Square.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 19, participants can paint a section of a business window with a fall- or Halloween-themed image. The Art Scared Gallery will remain through early November.

First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded, and all participants will go home with a gift bag, extra paint supplies and brushes.

Sign-ups to paint a window will close Oct. 18. Walk-ups will be accommodated at 10:30 a.m. the day of the event if spaces are available.

What else?

This year, the SMAL will also host the Arts Scared Market: All Things Spooky on the Hays County Historic Courthouse lawn. There will be arts and crafts; handmade art, such as jewelry and paintings; and more.

The nonprofit will also celebrate the fifth anniversary of the San Marcos Art Center.
