Ballots are being counted for the May 28 Republican primary runoff election, and early voting results have been released. In the race for the U.S. Representative District 35 Republican seat, candidate Steven Wright is narrowly leading with 50.19% of the vote.

According to unofficial early voting results, opponent Michael Rodriguez holds the remaining 49.81% of votes.

According to the Texas Secretary of State’s office, 85% of polling locations are reporting statewide at the time of publication.

The polls have closed for the May 28 Republican primary runoff election, and early voting results have been released. In the race for the U.S. Representative District 35 Republican seat, candidate Steven Wright is narrowly leading with 51.11% of the vote.

What you need to know

According to unofficial early voting results, opponent Michael Rodriguez holds the remaining 48.89% of votes.


The background

In the March primary, Rodriguez narrowly led the race with Wright following close behind to join him in the runoff election. The remaining candidates Dave Cuddy, Brandon Craig Dunn and Rod Lingsch did not secure enough votes to qualify for the runoff election.

Since no candidate received at least 50% of the vote, the runoff election needed to occur.

The winner of the May runoff will face Democrat Greg Casar in the November general election.


What else?

Official totals from ballots cast May 28 have yet to be released. Polls closed at 7 p.m., although voters who were in line at 7 p.m. were still able to cast ballots.

According to the Texas Secretary of State’s office, 68% of polling locations are reporting statewide at the time of publication.
