After the filing period closed for open school board seats Feb. 18, four candidates filed in San Marcos CISD and five in Hays CISD for the May elections; however, one withdrew from running in SMCISD.

The District 4 spot had three candidates for the seat being vacated by retiring board member Kathy Hansen, but one—John Leonard—withdrew his candidacy, according to Alicia Guenther, secretary to the assistant superintendent for business at SMCISD.

The two candidates still in the race are Brian Shanks and Gabrielle Moore.

The District 5 spot has Clementine Cantu running unopposed for re-election. Cantu is also the president of the board of trustees.

In HCISD, Byron Severance and Amy Grant are running for the District 4 spot. Meredith Keller, the current District 4 board member, did not file for re-election. Keller was first elected to the board in 2010.

Esperanza Orosco, the current District 5 board member, filed for re-election and is being challenged by Bear Heiser for the District 5 spot.

Esmeralda Pérez-González was appointed to the District 2 spot by a vote of the school board in December 2021 to fill a vacancy, and is the only candidate who filed for that position.

School board members in both districts serve for three-year terms.

The last day to register to vote is April 7, and the last day to apply for a ballot by mail is April 26. Early voting for the election will run from April 25-May 3, and election day is May 7.
