The new San Marcos CISD natatorium is anticipated to break ground in late spring, with other 2023 bond projects in the works.

The details

Located at the San Marcos High School, the natatorium would break ground at the end of May to mid-June following permit approval from the city, SMCISD staff said at a board meeting April 21.

The new 21,865-square-foot facility features a competition pool, a concourse level with spectator seating, boys and girls locker rooms, a laundry and storage facility, offices and restrooms.

SMCISD Chief of Operations Bernie Sandoval said the two-level metal building would also be used for water safety lessons, with a planned shallow end to safely conduct those lessons.

The current proposed GMP sits at about $15.9 million, down from a proposed $16 million, Sandoval said.

Project staff are working to start the project in the next 45-60 days, pending permitting decisions, he said.

Natatorium completion is set for fall 2026.

What else

SMCISD staff are working on other projects at various district facilities, Sandoval said.

The Mendez Elementary School replacement project to rebuild the site as a new K-8 campus is set to start this month. The first phase will be completed June 2026, with demolition of the old school facility to take place in November 2026.

The first phase of SMHS additions and renovations has a start date of May 2025, which includes administration building renovations, a band practice pad, parking additions and relocating utilities, as previously reported by Community Impact. Completion for Phase 1 is expected in August.

SMHS Phase 2, focusing on fine arts with a new black box, a new band hall and choir and orchestra upgrades, will start in September 2025 and end in August 2027. Phase 3 includes special education upgrades and new classroom additions, starting December 2025 to be completed August 2027.

Upgrades to the Miller Middle School athletics facilities, including locker rooms and a new weight room, are currently in progress and expected to finish this August.

Goodnight Middle School is undergoing bond projects, including a new black box for the fine arts auditorium and a new courtyard, with a completion date of August. Goodnight will also receive a new bandhall, set to be finished in November.
