Some of the renovations set to take place include renovations of existing gyms, renovations of existing locker rooms and athletic additions.
According to SMCISD Director of Operations Bernie Sandoval is in the process of finding a contractor to complete the renovations. SMCISD is having difficulties finding a contractor due to labor shortages, finding superintendents and some contractors being overbooked with other jobs.
Sandoval said SMCISD has put out requests for proposals to find a contractor for the renovations. The request will be issued again to get more bids after only having one response on the initial request.
SMCISD board President Clementine Cantu voted against the allocation of funds, citing budgetary concerns and the potential for the renovations to cause inequity between Miller Middle School and Goodnight Middle School.
“My only reason for not voting for it is that I'm worried about the fund balance, and I'm worried about returning money to the state,” Cantu said. “I would like both campuses to be equal, but still, it's a hard thing when we're looking at our budget and looking at our fund balance.”
