The Hays CISD board of trustees approved the appointment of a new director of athletics and new deputy academic officer at a meeting April 18.

Lance Moffett from Fredericksburg ISD has been appointed to the athletics director position. Throughout his career, Moffett has served as a physical education teacher, head football coach and athletic coordinator at a variety of school districts, including Conroe, Leander and Round Rock ISDs.

“A strong work ethic and love of not just athletics, but also the entire educational process and its relationship with extracurricular activities are cornerstones of my philosophy and practice,” Moffett said in a press release. “Further, my willingness to adapt to meet the needs of today’s student athletes will serve Hays CISD well. I will strive to give each individual student athlete an opportunity to compete at the highest level possible and accept his or her role while preparing each student athlete to excel in their faith, family, community, academics and athletics.”

Additionally, David Pierce has been promoted to the academic officer position after 13 years as principal of Hays High School. Pierce began his career in education in 1995 in Austin ISD, where he later served as assistant principal, and he went on to become principal at Mount Vernon High School at Mount Vernon ISD.

As deputy academic officer, Pierce will oversee curriculum and instruction programs as well as academic and operational leadership of a handful of schools in the district.

“We are so excited that he is going to stay with our Hays CISD family and be able to advance his career. I know he’s going to have so much to offer,” Superintendent Eric Wright said.

Pierce will finish out the year at Hays High School and assume the new role in the summer, following the retirement of the current officer, Sami Kinsey.

“I appreciate and value the relationships, the learning and the growth I have experienced as principal of Hays High School. We have a proud past and an even brighter future in Hays CISD. I am confident we have the right ingredients to make Hays CISD the destination place for new families coming to Central Texas so that they can experience what I experienced for my own children in Hays CISD—a great education from dedicated people,” Pierce said in a press release.
