The 2022-23 academic calendar’s spring break lines up with the University of Texas break while the 2023-24 UT calendar has yet to be released. If the HCISD 2023-24 break does not align with the UT break, the board may amend the calendar to match.
Hiring incentive
Due to staffing shortages, the board will also vote to implement early hiring practices and to offer a $1,500 hiring incentive to applicants who are hired and serve high-need areas.
“Universities and teacher-preparation programs have communicated that they are experiencing less student interest in the teaching profession and that districts should anticipate higher-than-normal staffing shortages in the future,” the document read.
The high-need content areas HCISD identified are bilingual, special education, dyslexia, speech language pathologist and school psychology licensed specialist positions.
Additionally, hiring and retention of teachers are most needed at Camino Real Elementary, Uhland Elementary, Hemphill Elementary, Simon Middle and Lehman High schools.
If approved, both new and returning teachers for the district will receive the incentive.
May election
The board will also take action on whether to officially call for a bond election, which entails four projects totaling $115.65 million, previously reported on by Community Impact Newspaper.
The board meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Historic Buda Campus, 300 San Marcos St., Buda.
