Texas State University President Denise Trauth announced May 11 that in-person commencement ceremonies for spring and summer graduates have been canceled due to the coronavirus.
Previously, the ceremonies for spring graduates had been postponed to Aug. 6 and 8, and summer ceremonies to Aug. 7. Now, graduates will have virtual commencement ceremonies on those days.
“After exhausting every possible scenario, we have made the hard decision that it will not be possible to hold in-person commencement ceremonies in August 2020 for spring and summer graduates while adhering to the required social distancing measures," Trauth said in a statement directed to students.
According to Trauth, planning is underway to have a “very special experience” to honor graduates during the virtual commencement.
“No matter what form commencement takes, those degrees are yours now and for the rest of your lives,” Trauth said told 2020 graduates in her statement.
