After going through hundreds of name suggestions, the Hays CISD 2017 Naming Committee has chosen Uhland Elementary School for the district's elementary school opening August 2018. The committee will also recommend two names for the district's third high school — Buda High School or a name that honors William M. Johnson, the first and longest serving superintendent of Hays CISD. Hays CISD Public Information Officer Tim Savoy said the committee wanted to have as much community input as possible and was fortunate to receive numerous options for the new schools' names. “Naming a school is an important decision. These names will be in place at least 50 years and likely much, much longer,” Savoy said. “From the start, this process has been about having to select the best name choices from a list of great name choices.” A few other names included on the short list were Jim Cullen, Dr. Jesse Porras, Lamont Ramage, Tex Hughson, Onesimo “Tete” Rodriguez, Nolan Kunkel, Suzie Kana, Robert “Cutty” Schneider and Nancy Cavendish. The committee recommendations will be presented to the Board of Trustees during its business meeting on Nov. 27. From there, the board will officially vote on the name selections on Dec. 11. The new elementary school replacing Buda Elementary School will retain its name.
