GFiber internet service is one step closer to being available for Georgetown residents after a groundbreaking event Sept. 23 at the Light and Waterworks District Plaza, according to a news release from the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce.
The event marked a milestone for gFiber, formerly Google Fiber, as it starts installation in Georgetown.

City Council approved a license agreement with gFiber in October 2025, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The agreement gave gFiber right-of-way access to install and operate the network.
Public Works Director Eric Johnson previously said installation includes microtrenching, a “less intrusive” method that uses narrow underground channels along roads, curbs and sidewalks to install the fiber cables. Johnson said road closures related to gFiber installation would be kept “to an absolute minimum, if at all,” according to previous reporting.
