At the end of the filing period Feb. 15, both of the incumbent Hays CISD board members who occupy seats up for election May 4 had filed to run again, and each had a challenger.

Board President Meredith Keller, who was first elected to represent District 4 in 2010, will be opposed by Mark Summers. According to his application, Summers is a Buda resident and engineer.

District 5 trustee Esperanza Orosco is running for re-election and will be challenged by Kyle resident Frank Juarez, Jr., a teacher. Orosco was first elected in 2016.

Both seats belong to single-member districts, representing specific geographic areas. The HCISD board of trustees has five single-member districts and two at-large representatives.

The deadline to file for write-in candidates is Feb. 19.
