At its meeting on Aug. 30 the Hays CISD board of trustees voted to impanel a committee to redraw the district’s high school attendance zones in advance of the opening of Johnson High School in August 2019; each board member will choose five members for a total committee size of 35 people.

According to the initial time frame outlined by HCISD, members of the rezoning committee will be selected by mid-September. Per district policy, the committee will begin, at its first meeting on Sept. 27, with two or three initial draft maps to discuss.

The committee will then seek input from the community, both on the district website—which will have information about the process as well as any draft maps produced—and at two public forums in October.

The committee may have a proposed attendance zone map as early as November, according to HCISD Public Information Officer Tim Savoy, but the board of trustees must vote on a new map by January at the latest so that families can plan for the coming year.

Johnson High School, which will be the district’s third, is under construction on FM 967 west of FM 1626 in Buda. It was funded by a bond approved by voters in 2017.
