Root Cellar Cafe, which has locations in San Marcos and New Braunfels, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by returning to its roots—focusing solely on brunch.

The restaurant, originally established in 2005 as a San Marcos brunch spot, will discontinue dinner service after Feb. 16 to refocus on its original concept, according to a Feb. 6 news release.

The overview

Root Cellar will continue serving breakfast and lunch while adding new menu items, including eggs Benedict, eggs Florentine, chicken salad, and espresso drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes. Already served offerings include chicken and waffles, Brazilian French toast, snickerdoodle bread pudding, and the signature beet burger, according to a news release.

The release also highlights Root Cellar’s commitment to bringing the community together through quality food and exceptional service. The restaurant focuses on crafting Americana cuisine with an artisanal touch, making every dish from scratch, sourcing local ingredients when possible, and baking fresh bread daily.

Founder Kyle Mylius said the space will now be available nightly for event rentals, including anniversaries, engagements and graduations.

The background

Root Cellar is a part of The Taproot Restaurant Collective, which is a hospitality group specializing in the direction and management of six dining concepts, which includes Root Cellar Cafe, Root Cellar Catering Co., The Coffee Bar, Rhea’s Ice Cream, Tin Top Burgers and The Gruene Grove, according to the news release.

Root Cellar has two locations, one in downtown San Marcos and the other one in New Braunfels, which was opened in Feb. 2023, according to past Community Impact reporting.
