The Local, 210 N. Edward Gary St., San Marcos, will open to residents on Saturday. The 96-unit, 304-bedroom student housing complex includes a mix of studios and 1-, 2- and 4-bedroom apartments.

John David Carson, who, along with EDR, is developing the project, said studios and 1-bedroom apartments are sold out, but some 2- and 4-bedroom units are still available.

Rent for a room in a 4-bedroom apartment is $679, he said.

Among the amenities at the development are a complimentary bike-sharing program for residents as well as a bicycle storage facility, fitness center, pool, study area and media room. Each room is also equipped with high-speed Internet as well as cable TV, including channels such as HGTV and HBO.

Carson estimated that about 25-35 percent of residents moving into The Local are declining to lease a parking space in the development's parking garage. He said that fits with the development's goal of fostering a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly atmosphere.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce is planned for July 20 at 11 a.m.
