San Marcos CISD announced June 8 that curbside meals at Mendez Elementary School would be suspended starting June 9 until further notice. The decision comes after the district learned that a SMCISD child nutrition employee at Mendez Elementary tested positive for the coronavirus.

The employee who was working at the school June 3 used personal protective equipment and maintained proper social distancing. According to a SMCISD statement, the employee was not exhibiting symptoms and received a temperature check during a safety protocol screening prior to the shift.

The district has communicated with all SMCISD staff who might have had direct contact with the employee and directed them to self-quarantine. In addition, the district is asking parents who picked up food at Mendez Elementary last week to monitor for any flu-like symptoms and call a medical professional if displaying any symptoms.

“We recognize that safety precautions must be taken for our dedicated employees as they work to ensure families have a nutrition option over the summer. For that reason, all of our food service preparation and distribution areas are thoroughly sanitized multiple times a day and our certified food services workers wear gloves and face coverings to prepare and distribute meals,” SMCISD said in a statement. “We are also enforcing mandatory practices of social distancing, frequent handwashing, and temperature readings for all of our distribution staff daily.”
