Nonprofits around San Marcos have taken precautions to brace for the spread of the coronavirus.

Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos—a nonprofit that offers a variety of programs in visual arts, literature, music and culinary arts for children and adults—canceled one of its major events for 2020, The Centro Spring Fiesta.

The event was scheduled to take place March 14, but the nonprofit pushed the date to June 13 as a direct response to coronavirus concerns.

CCHSM Executive Director Dr. Ricardo Espinoza said rescheduling The Centro Spring Fiesta has been the only action the nonprofit had taken as a precaution citing coronavirus concerns, adding that CCHSM is carrying business as usual.

“We try to follow the guidelines based on the Centers for Disease Control, as well as the county’s health department and the city’s,” Espinoza said, when explaining why the nonprofit had decided to reschedule the event.

Espinoza also added that CCHSM would be off for spring break from March 16-20.

“We’ll make a call after that,” Espinoza said, noting that the development of the virus would influence any additional precautions the organization decides to make.

Southside Community Center is another nonprofit in San Marcos that has taken precautions to contain the spread of the coronavirus, while maintaining its serves to the community.

The nonprofit is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and helps the community with transitional shelter, food, emergency assistance and housing has announced an office closure.

The offices at the nonprofit will be closed from March 16-20.

In addition, starting March 13, the nonprofit is providing meals in to-go containers, according to the nonprofit’s Facebook post.

Southside Community Center will also be suspending volunteer work until further notice, as a way to prevent the spread of the virus.
