Jane Hughson won the San Marcos mayor’s race, according to unofficial results.

With all precincts reporting results, San Marcos mayoral incumbent John Thomaides was behind by 775 votes. Thomaides received 6,692 votes, or 47.26 percent, while Hughson garnered 7,467 votes, or 52.74 percent.

Hughson, a longtime San Marcos resident who worked at Texas State University for 33 years before retiring in 2015, served as the Place 3 City Council member from 1996-2002 and as the Place 4 City Council member from 2014-2018.

She told Community Impact Newspaper that her top priorities, if elected, would be improving the quality of life in the city as it grows by focusing on workforce housing, public transit, stormwater issues, city facilities and strengthening the relationship between the city and the university.

Thomaides, who served five terms as a City Council member beginning in 2003, was first elected San Marcos mayor in December 2016. He ran on a platform of bringing more affordable housing to San Marcos, protecting established neighborhoods and the San Marcos River, and helping small, local businesses to flourish.
