About 20 acres of land at the corner of Hunter Road and McCarty Lane will soon be turned into a retirement care community. San Marcos City Council unanimously approved on first reading the rezoning that will allow Halcyon San Marcos—a 55-and-older community that would include independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and hospice care—to be built at 3200 Hunter Road, San Marcos, on Tuesday. Council members still have to approve the rezoning to a Planned Development District, or PDD, on a second reading. "This is a well-needed facility in San Marcos, and we welcome that," Council Member Lisa Prewitt said. The land is currently owned by First Baptist Church, which fully supports the project. The San Marcos Planning Commission also recommended rezoning the property to allow this project. Kissing Tree, a community for residents age 55 and older, will be located down the road and will have 3,200 independent living homes once completed. Council still has to approve this rezoning on second reading on Dec. 5.
