With all the votes counted, Jane Hughson will be re-elected to San Marcos City Council. Hughson received 1,745 votes, or 81.16 percent of the vote, while her opponent, Joshua Simpson, received 405, or 18.84 percent of the vote. She defeated opponent Joshua Simpson with 1,345 votes, or 79.73 percent of the vote. Simpson received 342 votes, or 20.27 percent of the vote. With preliminary results showing her beating newcomer Joshua Simpson in the Place 4 race with more than 80 percent of the vote, Hughson said she was happy voters had faith in her. "I'm really, really overwhelmed," she said of the margin of preliminary votes in her favor. The other incumbent running for San Marcos City Council, Place 3's Ed Mihalkanin, is leading in early voting totals as well. The two first ran for and won their respective seats on San Marcos City Council in 1996. "We're a good team," Hughson said. Simpson congratulated Hughson and said he would continue to be active in the community. "I'm going to run every single time I have the opportunity to," he said. "I want the working man to be heard." Early voting and absentee ballot totals reported show Hughson received 81.14 percent of the vote, or 852 votes. Simpson received 18.86 percent of the vote, or 198 votes.
