Travis Mitchell won a runoff election June 11 for the Place 1 seat on Kyle City Council, defeating incumbent Diane Hervol for the seat. Mitchell received 722 votes, or 58.65 percent of the total, and Hervol received 509 votes or 41.35 percent of the total.

Assistant City Secretary Jennifer Vetrano said the results will be canvassed at City Council’s next meeting June 21. Until then, the results are considered unofficial.

Mitchell said he made the decision to run for the seat in September 2015 and officially announced his candidacy in November. He called his election to the office “one of the greatest honors of my life.”

Mitchell said he hopes to begin working with City Council on the city’s budget, which must be approved by September. City Council will hold public meetings and workshops throughout the summer to discuss the budget.

“My only goal is to see that we hold our spending steady and that we don’t increase just because there is new money available,” he said. “I’m really going to push for that.”

Among Mitchell’s other priorities are creation of a small-business incentive program and shifting the tax burden away from residents.

“I’m very thankful to have been given this opportunity,” Mitchell said. “I’m going to work very hard and strive to be transparent with residents.”

The race went to a runoff after each candidate received 510 votes in an election May 7.
