Maggie Hernandez Moreno is leading Sandra Sepulveda Lopez in the runoff race for the Democratic nominee for the Hays County justice of the peace, Precinct 1, Place 2 seat, according to unofficial early voting results released May 24. Hernandez Moreno has secured 439 votes, or 60.97 percent of the votes, and Sepulveda Lopez has received 281 votes, or 39.03 percent. Hernandez Moreno works as a public health and prevention specialist with the Department of State Health Services. She said her first priority if elected will be to ensure the justice system in Hays County is running efficiently. The crowding at the county jail necessitates that the justice system—including the justices of the peace—is not unnecessarily holding inmates at the jail, she said. Hernandez Moreno said she was pleased by the relatively high voter turnout. "We really thought this was going to be one of those races where it was going to be a matter of five or six votes that were going to make all the difference," she said. "I'm happy so many people came out to vote." Sepulveda Lopez is a lifelong San Marcos resident who serves as a justice clerk in the office of the Hays County constable for Precinct 5, according to her campaign website. Sepulveda Lopez could not be reached for comment. The race for the justice of the peace Precinct 1, Place 2 seat went to a runoff after no Democratic candidate received a majority of votes during the March 1 primary. Hernandez Moreno led the Democratic race but failed to secure more than 50 percent of the vote. Her final tally amounted to 45.3 percent of votes, or 2,077 votes, and Sepulveda Lopez finished with 38.63 percent, or 1,771 votes. The winner of the race will face Republican Shane Scott in the Nov. 8 general election. Precinct 1 covers southeastern portion of the county from San Marcos north to the banks of the Blanco River. Hays County justices of the peace are elected to four-year terms. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
