Back then, downtown San Marcos looked very different, according to Egan. Many buildings along LBJ Drive and surrounding streets were vacant, parking was easier, and summer months were slow enough that Egan and her team would sometimes close the shop to spend the day at the river.
“Things have gotten a lot busier since then, and that’s a good thing,” Egan said in a written interview to Community Impact. “In all that time, we have kept our commitment to providing great tattoos and great customer service.”
The overview
Egan said the Classic team is proud to have helped put San Marcos on the map as a destination for quality tattoo work, drawing clients from across Texas and beyond. Still, according to Egan, their favorite clients remain the locals—young and old—who walk through the door and leave “just a little more colorful than they were before.”
Looking back
Egan said over the years, the crew has built countless memories, but the shop’s art shows stand out as particularly meaningful—nights where the community gathered and the artists showcased their talent beyond the tattoo chair.
Classic takes walk-ins seven days a week, with Egan stating that the staff feels “lucky to be able to share this art form that can never be lost or stolen.”
She said even after 20 years, the team remains focused on constant growth and collaboration.
Staff often stay late to paint together, share ideas and critique one another in a positive way—which, according to Egan, keeps artwork fresh and vibrant.
Notable quote
“For me personally as the owner, I never get tired of walking up LBJ toward the shop, unlocking the door, turning the open sign on, putting on some music and waiting to see what the day brings,” she added. “Regardless of what happens, we stay ready to give good tattoos with a smile.”
What’s next
To celebrate the anniversary, Classic Tattoo will offer flash specials and host guest artists from May 11–17, according to a recent announcement on the shop’s Instagram page.
