Café Cortado

The European-inspired coffee truck, owned by San Marcos local Krendi Harmon, sells European dark roast coffee and specializes in Cortado Coffee—which is coffee made with espresso and steamed milk. Café Cortado offers a selection of hot and cold coffee, frappes and non-coffee beverages.

The Barber Factory

The barbershop—which was previously home to Danny & Barbara’s Barbershop—is locally owned by Christian Caballero. The Barber Factory offers men's and women's haircuts and hair coloring services, including fades. The barbershop also offers tinsel. Caballero said they will be offering tattoos and esthetician services including lashes and facials.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Inc.,


The restaurant, now open, had closed following a fire that caused the roof to collapse in April 2023. The building has since received new paint, inside seating and decor. Popeyes offers fried chicken with various sides.Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy

The comic book store is locally owned by Steve Wallace and his wife, Janet, along with his sister LeAnn Baze and her husband, Steven. Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy sells a variety of hobby and fantasy-related games, such as War Hammer, Pokémon, Dungeon & Dragons, and more. The store also has tables set up for people to play the games, and paint miniature models and figurines.Family Health Spa

The spa is owned by Robert and Lisa Presser who also own AC8 Spa, formerly Gold Hand Massage, located in San Mar Plaza. Family Health Spa offers a variety of massages including full body, deep tissue, hot stone and more.Alta Center Point

The project, led by Tyler Sibley, was developed by Wood Partners and Pursuant Ventures Development. Once completed, Alta Center Point will have a total of 330 units spanning across 11 buildings. Katz On The Go Cafe


The cafe, which opened in July 2023, closed its doors due to family reasons, according to a Facebook post. Katz On The Go Cafe was owned by Catheline Maldonado and sold breakfast tacos and pastries. The cafe also sold a variety of hot and cold coffee beverages, as well as non-coffee beverages.

The pizzeria which serves calzones and signature pizzas celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 9.TX7

The H-E-B on East Hopkins Street in San Marcos is undergoing a series of interior and exterior renovations. According to an email from Public Affairs Manager Tamra Jones H-E-B renovations include the reconfiguration of non-perishable product aisles, updated company signs, fresh paint and new fuel tanks. The grocer will also be removing the car wash to provide needed parking space. The renovations are slated to be completed in early August.Green Heron Bookshop

The locally owned bookshop is currently located at 323 W. Hopkins St. and will be relocating to a historic home at 504 Burleson St. in San Marcos. The home—which was built in 1865—will have more space for more events and inventory. Green Heron Bookshop sells new books and some used books. Aside from novels, Green Heron Bookshop sells San Marcos-based postcards, Texas art and stickers.Pak Mail

Brothers Karan and Pranay Desai took over ownership of the local shipping office on June 1. Pak Mail is an authorized shipping center for UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL and several freight carriers. On top of its existing services like copying, scanning, laminating, notarization, printing business cards and more, the Desais have added passport photos, shredding, office supplies and virtual mailboxes.Monroe Hair Studio

The hair studio celebrated its 15-year anniversary on June 1. Monroe Hair Studio is locally owned by Lanna Welch Horton and offers haircuts and hair colorings such as highlights and balayages. Monroe Hair Studio also offers hair treatments, eyebrow waxing and lip waxing.Texas State University


The board of the Commission on Presidential Debates canceled all 2024 presidential debates on June 24—including the debate scheduled for Sept. 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos. Jen O'Malley Dillon, campaign chair for the Biden-Harris Campaign, informed the commission President Joe Biden will not agree to debate under the sponsorship of the commission during the 2024 general election, according to a news release.
